Architectural colleges around the country are offering classes on how to create a cathedral and how to use its architectural elements to enhance the experience of living in a cathedral.
Architects are taking classes on the topic and, at least in some cases, they’re offering free tuition, according to The Architectural Digest.
The first classes in California were held in June, according the magazine.
They were aimed at students who want to design or build a church or a chapel or other type of structure that will be used to serve a religious purpose.
The courses include architectural elements like windows, stained glass, stone, wood, and plaster.
The courses, which typically cost $15,000, can be completed in one or two weeks.
It doesn’t matter if the project involves concrete, brick, or wood, they should include a mix of the three materials, according Togepi.
“I think it’s a really interesting way of thinking about design in the context of religion and architecture,” she told the magazine in a phone interview.
“There’s a lot of different kinds of buildings, and we can take the most basic buildings and put them into the context and make it a place where we can actually make a difference.”
There are several different ways to design a cathedral, and the students are learning to work with these different approaches, said architect and professor Eric Pomerantz, who taught a course called Architecture in the Cathedral at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in October.
Architectural schools in the United States are increasingly teaching the study of architecture as a means to educate students about the history of architecture and to teach them about how to design buildings, he told Business Insider.
“This is very much the future of the field,” he said.
“Architecture schools are going to be more than just a classroom.”
Pomerantz is an associate professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and is also a member of the College of Architecture at the College.
He’s teaching a course titled Architecture in a Cathedral, which focuses on how architects can use their skills and experience to design cathedral architecture.
He’s been teaching a similar course for nearly a decade.
“The cathedral has always been a place of worship, and there is something really wonderful about the architecture of churches,” Pomerants said.
“We’re not going to see it as something that’s going to take a lot longer or take more people.”
The students who take the classes are often motivated by an understanding that a cathedral is a symbol of religion, but also that it can also be a place for community, he said, according a video on the Architectural Institute’s website.
“It is also, of course, a place to build bridges between the church and the world,” he added.
“We are not going away, but we can build a new cathedral and it can be a bridge that will connect us all.”
Togepi said she wants to see more students take the courses, especially young people.
If a church is a place that you can be in for a few hours a day and you don’t have a lot to do, but want to get involved with something and learn something new, then I think we have to be willing to learn,” she said.
